PDF Password Protection and Unlock

Protect files or remove known-password encryption locally.

This tool processes selected files in your browser.

Accepted: application/pdf, .pdf. Desktop cap 100 MiB per file.

How it works

  1. Choose an unencrypted PDF to protect, or an encrypted PDF to unlock.
  2. Enter the password twice. AES-256 is the only method in this pack.
  3. Protect must fail to open without the password. Unlock with the wrong password fails.

Passwords stay in this tab. They are never in share URLs.

Wrong password fails. Permission flags are advisory, not DRM. pdf-lib ignoreEncryption is not used.

Supported inputs and outputs

PDF in and out. QPDF WASM AES-256 (AESv3) at /engines/qpdf/.

Example

Protect a one-page PDF; pdf-lib load without a password throws PASSWORD_REQUIRED. Unlock with the same password reopens as %PDF-.

Can I bypass a password?

No. Only the password you type is tried, on this device.
